What is a Chronograph Watch?
A chronograph watch is a timepiece that can be used as a stopwatch, while also offering a standard display and typical watch capabilities. Most analog chronograph watches feature dials that keep track of seconds, minutes, and hours. This can be helpful in a wide variety of ways, from using it during athletic events to even cooking food in your kitchen. Keeping track of time elapsed has many useful applications.
Many chronograph watches also offer functionality as a tachymeter, thanks to the included information and details on the watch’s bezel or around the circumference of the face. A tachymeter can be used to compute a speed based on travel time or measure distance based on speed.
Watches can differ in how they present this information, so be sure to check your watch’s instructions for more details on how to measure speed or distance. But, in general terms, a tachymeter uses the watch’s second hand to measure speed over a set distance. For example, if a car travels one mile, and you want to know how fast the car is travelling, simply start the second hand at the 12 o’clock position and stop it when the car hits the mile mark. Typically the button that starts and stops the second hand is at the 2 o’clock position. Then, look around the watch face to see the number that the second hand is pointing at on the tachymeter. This will show you the speed of the car.
There are also digital chronograph watches that provide the same functions as those listed above, but do so without the need for multiple dials on the face. Digital watches can show this information with just a few pushes of the buttons around the dial, giving you an easy-to-use and simple to read way of timing activities.
